What is the difference between cast plaque & precision tooled plaques?

& Why We Prefer to Use One Over the Other

Like many businesses, each individual foundry has its specialty. We all claim to create durable signage for our clients and have our preferences of how to do so, but at our core, we operate differently. From cast plaques or precision tooled plaques to American made or internationally sourced, it’s up to you to purchase from the foundry that aligns with you.

However, when making purchasing decisions, it isn’t hard to get overwhelmed with industry terms and seemingly infinite options. Our blog and website are designed to help you feel more confident in those decisions.

Today, we’re breaking down the difference between cast plaques and precision tooled plaques.

Cast Plaques

What are they?

Cast plaques are constructed with an additive manufacturing process. This means they’re “built” from the ground up. Think 3D printing! Any texture on the cast plaque is integral to the casting, rather than added afterward.

They are a timeless way to honor, commemorate, or inform in the form of building signage or stand alone memorials. Crafted through a meticulous casting process, molten metal like bronze or aluminum is poured into custom molds, capturing intricate details with stunning precision. The result is a durable, elegant cast plaque perfect for memorials, dedications, or signage, built to stand the test of time in any setting.

What are they used for?

Precision Tooled Plaques

What are they?

Precision tooled plaques are crafted using advanced CNC (computer numerical control) machinery, which can create detailed designs. Unlike cast plaques, which are built through an additive process, precision tooled plaques are created by engraving or cutting directly into a solid metal plate, a subtractive process. This method lends itself to intricate designs and text.

Similar to cast plaques, precision tooled plaques are a timeless way to honor, commemorate, or inform in the form of building signage or stand alone memorials. The process allows for a range of finishes, giving each plaque a polished, refined look that complements any setting.

Our Durable Signage Preference & Why

On the surface, these metal plaque creation methods are quite similar.

From finish options, uses, and metals used - to the average person, the result seems similar. Why not go with the least expensive option?

Well, since you’re educating yourself by reading this blog, you AREN’T the average person.

A.R.K Ramos uses the cast plaque process for our American made, durable signage. With a mission to help our clients create legacies, we decided it best to not sacrifice quality for price.

Our Reason

As a foundry, we create memorials, ADA signage, and building signage - all of which deserve exceptional quality and attention to detail.

Cast plaques are more durable and long-lasting than precision tooled plaques. Precision tooled plaques have textures sprayed on, risking flaking and chipping, whereas cast plaque textures are engrained in the construction. Precision tooled plaques don’t stand up to natural wear and tear as well as cast plaques.

Precision tooled plaques may traditionally be recognized as more detailed and cost effective, but our work ethic and process allows us to create detailed cast plaques. Plus, is it really cost effective if you have to replace the plaque every few years?

Every cast plaque project that comes through our doors is meticulously crafted. From initial quote to delivery, we’ve created a process that ensures our cast metals allow your business signage to stand the test of time. We know what we’re good at, and we stick to it!

That being said, if you want a durable signage project that lasts years after installation, if you want to create a lasting legacy and impression, then a cast plaque is the way to go!
